This 19th-century English country cricket table is a side table constructed with an elm top and a painted pine base in a natural brown colour. The circular two-part elm top displays a visible wood grain and characterful age-related patina, resting on a sturdy base with three splayed legs and a lower triangular shelf. It measures 59 cm in height and 60 cm in diameter, making it a versatile size for modern interiors. The piece functions well as an end of a sofa table, lamp table, or occasional table in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The construction combines antique and reclaimed elements with age-related wear, surface marks, knocks, and imperfections on the timber, creating a rustic farmhouse aesthetic suitable for traditional and country-style homes.

FAQs

A cricket table is a traditional form of vernacular British furniture, featuring a circular planked top supported by three splayed legs. Originating in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the three-legged structure provided stability on uneven stone or earthen floors in country cottages and taverns.

These tables were constructed from native British hardwoods, most frequently elm, oak, ash, or fruitwoods. Construction relied on pegged mortise and tenon joinery, often incorporating an undertier or triangular shelf to strengthen the legs.

Authentic period cricket tables feature hand-hewn timber, wooden dowels or pegs, and uneven surface wear around the stretchers and feet. Shrinkage across the circular grain and historic patination are key indicators of genuine age.

A cricket table functions as an occasional side table alongside an armchair or sofa, offering a compact surface for lighting or books. Its geometric three-legged profile makes it suited for corners, alcoves, or hallways.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive liquid cleaners. Periodically apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish to protect the grain and preserve the existing patina.
