A Three Mast Early 19th Century Model Sailing Ship in a Bottle

Description

This skilfully made diorama depicts a three-mast early 19th-century sailing ship at the harbour, with a raised landscape behind and cottages set into the hillside. Opposite, a small rocky outcrop features a lighthouse. This rare example has been beautifully hand built and painted within a spirit bottle. This is a complicated task to achieve particularly to this fine quality and detail.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Ships in bottles emerged as a prominent form of maritime folk art during the nineteenth century, coinciding with the mass production of clear glass bottles. Sailors often constructed these intricate miniatures during extended voyages at sea using leftover wood, string, and bone.

Craftsmen built the miniature ship outside the bottle with hinged masts that lay flat. After inserting the collapsed model through the narrow neck, the maker pulled hidden threads attached to the rigging to erect the masts and secure the structure in place.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-carved wooden hulls, hand-sewn or thread rigging, natural cork stoppers, and blown or moulded glass showing slight imperfections such as air bubbles or uneven thickness.
