Antique Victorian Carved Walnut Music Stand

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Victorian carved walnut music stand. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is of extremely fine quality, the solid walnut tripod base is beautifully carved. The top section has a pierced harp motif, it can be positioned at an angles on both sides to support sheet music, or it can be locked into a flat position. The brass rise and fall mechanism works well, the height can be adjusted to a wide range of sizes.

This would also be very useful as a menu holder in a restaurant / bar setting.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear here and there. The ratchet mechanisms that hold the tilt in place has one bit of damage on one arm, which means it is shorter, so that side is only supported by half of the mechanism. It is hardly noticeable and still holds firmly in place, it would support just as strong a weight as if there were both sides supporting. It is shown in the images.

Width – 19 inches , 48 cm

Depth – 19 inches , 48 cm

Lowest height – 58 inches , 147 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian music stands were designed during the 19th century to support sheet music for home performances, often featuring decorative lyre motifs, turned central columns, and height-adjustable mechanisms.

These items were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently incorporating brass adjustment mechanisms and carved tripod bases.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved details, brass or iron thread mechanisms for height adjustment, aged wood patina, and historical wear around the base and page supports.

A music stand functions well placed alongside a piano, positioned in a reading corner to display art books or manuscripts, or set within an empty alcove as a decorative piece.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and moisture to preserve the finish.
