Rare 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Book Carrier Desk Stand

18th century
Description

An Extremely Rare 18th Century Mahogany George III Period Book Carrier, Or Desk Stand Tidy, Having Two Short Drawers And One Long Drawer, Retaining Original Brass Handles And Escutcheons, Below Well Figured Shelf Enclosed By Elegant Moulded Shaped Gallery And Wire Grill Panel To Back, With Hooped Carrying Handle Above.

Originally this beautiful little antique desk accessory would have been made to sit on top of a desk, housing a selection of books for easy access and also of course allowing one to utilise the lovely little drawers to keep their desk tidy. Once the selection of books have been exhausted then it would simply be picked up and taken to the library, allowing the books to be changed and a fresh selection brought back to the office.

Its worth noting that this is one of the earliest examples of these which we have seen, it is much more common to find Regency examples, so his dates to around 70 or so years earlier than the norm as a minimum. The book stand is of excellent quality, constructed from attractive, well figured, mahogany timber which is accentuated by the lovely colour, original brasswear and brass grill panel.

Overall the condition is good and as with all items which we offer for the sale this Georgian Mahogany Desk Stand has been inspected in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish in the traditional manner before being offered for sale, ensuring it is ready to be placed into immediate active service, where it would be a wonderful addition to any antique desk.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian book carrier is a small, portable tabletop piece designed during the 18th century to store and transport a select number of books and writing implements between rooms.

These items were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban or Honduran mahogany, often featuring secondary woods such as oak or pine for drawer linings, alongside brass hardware and wire mesh panels.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular hand-sawn timber marks on back and underside panels, original brass escutcheons, and genuine surface patina acquired over centuries.

Position the piece on a home office desk, library table, or sideboard to display leather-bound volumes and store stationery while adding warmth and historical structure to the space.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the grain, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage.
