Mid 19th Century Exhibition Quality Finely Carved Continental Fruitwood Trophy Carving

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century exhibition quality finely carved Continental fruitwood trophy carving presented in a frame.

This superbly carved panel consists of various 'trophy' and hunting related articles such as a carved fish, birds, finely carved basket of fruit, tassels, ribbon and bells, fish basket, various hunting implements, oak leaves and acorns, a bag with superbly carved fringing and tassels, fishing net containing fish, fruit, grapes and vines and horn musical instruments.

These types of carving were particularly fashionable in the mid-late 19th century, this panel being an excellent way of the exhibiting the quality of the wood carvers' work.

This panel is in very good, original condition with some natural splitting (which can be seen on the images) but the panel remains stable, can go straight into a home or collection and would make a wonderful statement wall piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A carved trophy panel is a decorative timber plaque featuring high-relief representations of grouped objects, traditionally incorporating themes such as hunting gear, harvested fruit, musical instruments, or flora.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as fruitwood, lime, oak, and walnut, which permitted intricate detail without splitting during hand-chiselling.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-tooling, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, light oxidisation, and age-consistent wear on raised surfaces.

Positioning a carved wood panel against a plain, neutral wall creates a focused visual accent, balancing historic craftsmanship with modern minimalism.

Dust gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals, and keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
