Patented by Miles Mason in 1813, Masons Ironstone was a durable, heavy earthenware designed as a practical alternative to Chinese porcelain. The Japanese Fence pattern, inspired by Imari designs, typically features cobalt blue, iron-red, and gilt motifs depicting oriental garden elements.

Ironstone is a type of heavy vitrified earthenware made from a mixture of china clay, ball clay, feldspar, and ground slag of iron. Pieces were typically transfer-printed with hand-coloured enamel highlights and glazed before high-temperature firing.

Authenticity is generally verified through impressed or printed crown and banner backstamps used between 1813 and the mid-19th century, along with the distinct heavy weight, characteristic crazing of the glaze, and vibrant hand-applied enamel colours.

Antique ironstone pieces add textural contrast and historical depth when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or mantels. Their robust forms complement both minimalist contemporary spaces and traditional country house interiors.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding dishwashers and harsh abrasives. Due to the porous nature of historical earthenware bodies and potential hairline crazing, soaking should be avoided to prevent staining.
