This Georgian cat or plate stand originates from the 18th century and is made of dark brown mahogany with a polished finish. The design incorporates three cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, supporting a turned central stem with wrythen carving and a spherical hub into which three radiating spiral-turned upper supports screw. Additional decorative details include crisp ring turnings along the upper arms and a central finial. Measuring 35.5 cm high, 28.5 cm wide and 30.5 cm deep, the stand serves as a traditional hearth accessory. In a contemporary home, this piece fits suitably on a fireplace hearth or beside a seating area in an English country house setting. The stand provides a compact surface for holding plates or similar items near a fire.

FAQs

A mahogany cat is an 18th-century hearth accessory featuring a multi-armed structure designed to support plates or bowls near an open fireplace to keep food warm.

These items were predominantly turned from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or fruitwood, incorporating turned spindle joints and tripod or multi-directional legs.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-turning, period joinery, natural timber shrinkage across the grain, and historic heat-darkening or patination on the base.

It functions as a sculptural display piece on a mantelpiece, hearth, or sideboard, functioning as standalone treen or supporting decorative ceramics.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity, dust regularly with a clean microfiber cloth, and apply clear natural beeswax polish periodically.
