FAQs

A 19th-century writing table is a freestanding piece of furniture designed for reading and correspondence, typically featuring a flat timber top, frieze drawers for stationery, and slender turned or tapered legs.

These tables were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often constructed with dovetailed drawer joints and fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic period pieces generally display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular underside saw marks, natural patination on the wood finish, and original brass hardware with slight surface variations.

A mahogany writing table functions effectively as a compact laptop desk in a modern home office, a hallway console table, or a dressing table in a bedroom, pairing seamlessly with contemporary lighting and artwork.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources or excessive humidity.
