Royal Worcester Figure “Grecian Maiden”, Model 1827, C. 1928

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely modelled Royal Worcester porcelain figure of a dancing woman, from the recognised “Grecian Maiden” series, model 1827, dating to circa 1928. The model originates in the Hadley period and remained in production due to its enduring appeal.

The figure is captured in motion, holding castanets (krotala), introducing a rhythmic quality associated with Spanish dance and flamenco. The composition maintains a classical balance while incorporating movement.

The modelling reflects Hadley’s influence, with flowing drapery and controlled asymmetry forming a continuous silhouette.

The surface is finished in a grey-toned pearlescent glaze with subtle transitions into smoky blue, creating a soft luminous effect. Gilding is applied with restraint to highlight key details.

The underside bears a puce Royal Worcester mark and model number 1827. The combination of dot system and “Made in England” inscription indicates a transitional period in factory marking practice.

A well-preserved and balanced example of this established Worcester model.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Royal Worcester produced classical and neoclassical figures from the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century, drawing design inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman statuary and executing them in fine soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain.

These figures were cast using porcelain slip, painted with metallic glaze or enamel, and finished with hand-applied gilding before undergoing multiple high-temperature kiln firings.

Authentic pieces carry printed or impressed factory marks on the underside, often incorporating a date code system, model numbers, and hand-gilded details on the base.

Position the figurine on a mantelpiece, floating shelf, or console table alongside modern framed artwork or minimalist ceramics to create a balanced visual focal point.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry brush, avoid immersion in water to protect gilded finishes, and place away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
