An Art Deco Karelian birch string ball
Turned sphere of Karelian birch formed in two parts that screw together, opens to a void interior for the string, brass ferrule to the top and a trio of brass balls as feet.

Karelian birch is a burr wood from a species of birch tree found in the Karelian region between Finland and Russia. Similar in style to birdseye maple and also called ''curly birch'', distinctive for its flame curls. Used for highly decorative pieces, in Russia a favourite of the Tsars for Imperial furniture.
