Unusual Regency Rosewood Centre Table

19th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

Very unusual late Regency rosewood veneered centre table of octagonal form. This table has a narrow cross banded freize with the most unusual design base. Large turned and carved central column with 4 small thin turned and carved supports to the corners with platform base and original turned and carved bun feet with inset castors. The table is of very good quality, even the inside part of the freize is veneered in rosewood. The top is a lovely colour having mellowed beautifully over the years. I am msure this must be by someone.

The table is basically in good condition but does require some veneer restorations.

Priced to sell in as found condition, a quote for restoration can be given if required.

This nineteenth-century Regency centre table is constructed from rosewood veneer with a warm brown, mellowed polished finish. The octagonal top displays canted corners and a narrow cross-banded frieze, sitting upon a quadform base. A large turned and carved central column is joined by four small thin turned and carved corner supports, terminating in original turned and carved bun feet fitted with inset castors. The timber shows visible age, including areas requiring veneer restoration in as found condition. Measuring 69 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 107 cm deep, this piece functions as a striking freestanding centre table in a principal reception room, library, or entrance hall. It provides a generous surface for display items while offering practical everyday utility in a traditional or period interior.

Regency centre tables, originating in early 19th-century Britain, were designed as focal points for drawing rooms or entry halls. They typically feature central pedestal bases, classical proportions, and rich hardwood veneers such as rosewood or mahogany.

Craftsmen primarily utilised exotic timber veneers like Brazilian rosewood and Cuban mahogany over oak or pine carcases, often incorporating brass marquetry, castors, and turned support columns.

Authentic pieces display period-correct joinery, natural timber oxidation beneath the top, original brass hardware, hand-cut dovetails, and grain figure characteristic of 19th-century rosewood rather than modern synthetic finishes.

Place the table in an entrance foyer or large room as an anchor piece, pairing it with modern lighting or contemporary decorative objects to create balanced textural contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and surface fading.
