ANTIQUE #SA1204018

Early 19th Century Scottish Needlework Sampler

£280    $375    €328
A charming early 19th-century needlework sampler, beautifully worked in coloured silks in excellent antique condition. The piece includes multiple rows of stitched letters and numbers, followed by a series of names — Wm Ingram, John Ingram, Henry Burt, Catherine Russell, Catherine Ingram 1822, along with several sets of initials. The lower section is richly decorated with traditional motifs including stylised trees, birds, hearts, flowers and geometric devices, all arranged with pleasing symmetry. The sampler is presented in an early frame with a paper backing label for John Haxton & Co., Fine Art Dealers and Picture Framers, 92 High Street, Kirkcaldy, adding a lovely touch of local provenance. A characterful and personal piece of Scottish needlework, full of charm and social history, and a wonderful example of the domestic artistry of the period.
