Rare Pair of Japanese Arita Clam Shell Dishes- Edo Period

Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Edo Period (1603-1868) pair of shell shaped dishes , the finely potted Clam shells are most likely to have been manufactured at the kilns of Arita sometime in the early 18th century, circa 1730. This most charming pair of fluted shell form dishes are decorated in more traditional Kutani palettes of green, iron red and gilt, depicting birds in flight above a landscape of flora as well as interspersed shells , the dishes stand on three curved moulded feet inside which are evidence of the non glazed kiln firing rest marks, the underside further decorated with shells and seaweed.

This particular type of dishes appear unrecorded and as such were likely made for the home market as opposed to being mass produced for export, a rare and fascinating pair of dishes for the collectors of period Japanese ceramics.

Condition report :

The shells are in quite lovely condition with only one miniscule fleabite to the underside of one rim.

FAQs

Arita porcelain refers to Japanese high-fired ceramic wares produced in and around the town of Arita in Hizen province. Developed during the Edo period (16031867), these pieces became famous for fine white porcelain bodies decorated with underglaze cobalt blue or vibrant overglaze enamel pigments.

These dishes were formed using crushed porcelain stone mixed with kaolin clay, shaped in relief moulds to replicate clam shells. After an initial high-temperature biscuit firing, artists applied clear glazes and overglaze enamel paints featuring naturalistic motifs before a second lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic Edo period pieces typically exhibit slight asymmetry from hand-moulding, spur marks on the base where the ceramic rested during firing, and subtle irregularities in the hand-painted enamels. The glaze may show slight pitting or iron spots inherent to historic Japanese kilns.
