19th century
Description

This impressive and highly decorative late 19th-century pottery figure was made at the Friedrich Goldscheider factory in Wien, Austria. He has a pleasing, happy expression.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in Vienna in 1885 by Friedrich Goldscheider, the manufactory gained international acclaim for producing high-quality terracotta, earthenware, and bronze sculptures. Their late 19th-century figures frequently depicted Orientalist, classical, and genre themes, characterised by realistic moulding and detailed hand-finishing.

Goldscheider artisans primarily used fine earthenware clay and terracotta. Figures were formed using slip-casting techniques, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently decorated with polychrome cold-painting, glazes, or bronze-patinated finishes to achieve varied tactile effects.

Authentic pieces usually feature impressed factory marks on the underside or reverse, such as Goldscheider Wien, the signature reproduction number, and artist initials. Original works exhibit fine detail in features, drapery, and anatomical proportions.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, marble console, or within a quiet alcove. Pair it with contemporary artwork or minimalist furnishings to highlight the detailed texture and classical form of the ceramic piece.

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid water saturation, chemical cleansers, or abrasive cloths, as these can strip original cold-painted pigments and delicate surface glazes.
