Rare Victorian Gilt Frame Deep Glazed Box Velvet Mount with Portrait (Q)

19th century
Description

This is a rare 19th century box frame of extremely fine quality in the most excellent condition dating from the Victorian era circa 1880. These box frames were expensive fine quality pieces so are fairly scare. The rosewood outer case is velvet lined with a curved cushion interior that holds the gilded gesso frame. The ornate detail of the gilded gesso is extremely fine and crisp having been protected behind glass for over 150 years.

This is one of 12 that we currently have listed from a good collection of Victorian frames all in perfect condition.

They include images on porcelain and also images highlighted in paint etc. The photographs carry the signature for the renowned G T Jones Photographers, Kingsway, Surbiton, who had the patronage of HRH The Queen as well as other royals (see last photo). The sheer quality of all of the frames really does reflect this connection.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian shadow box portrait features an artwork housed within a deep, glass-fronted wooden casing, layered with an inner gilt frame and a fabric lining such as velvet.

These frames were constructed from solid timber with carved or gesso-moulded embellishments finished in gold leaf, paired with velvet or silk linings and sheet glass covers.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidisation of the gold leaf, square-cut nails on the reverse timber backing, and minor irregularities in hand-blown glass.

It can be hung as an accent on a gallery wall, positioned above a sideboard, or displayed within a dark academia study setting to add historical depth.

Dust the exterior wood and glass gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent degradation of the gilt and fabric.
