Rare 19th Century Country House Dovecote Decoy

19th century
Description

A Charming white dove, (probably made by the estates own carpenter) for keeping and attracting their doves. Retaining its original painted finish and mounted on its original metal plate where it would have most likely been attached to the roof of the Dovecote. On later grain painted stand.

The white dove: A symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures. In ancient Greek mythology it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life. Early Christians portrayed baptism accompanied by a dove, often on their sepulchres and in the story of Noah in the Bible, when the flood waters receded, Noah sent out a dove which returned with an olive leaf, to show that the Biblical flood was over and that life had returned to Earth. Ever since, in the Christian faith, the dove has symbolised deliverance and God’s forgiveness.

Pablo Picasso made the dove a modern symbol of peace when it was selected as the emblem for the World Peace Congress in 1949.

Approximately 23cm tip of tail to tip of beak.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In the 19th century, dovecote and pigeon decoys were placed on rural country estates to attract wild birds to dovecotes for breeding or to entice game during sporting pursuits.

Traditional 19th-century decoys were carved from wood or cast in plaster, finished with layers of paint or gesso, and mounted using iron or copper fittings onto timber plinths.

Authentic period decoys display naturalised surface wear, historic paint layering over timber or plaster, handcrafted variations in carving, and age-appropriate oxidisation on metal fixings.

A decoy can be displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table alongside organic textures and natural stoneware to add historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid dislodging aged gesso or paint flakes, and keep the object in a stable environment away from excess moisture.
