Early 19th Century Worcester Porcelain Bowl, Dragon In Compartments Pattern, C. 1815

£1,000    $1,349    €1,168
An antique English porcelain bowl produced at the Worcester Porcelain Manufactory during the Flight, Barr & Barr period. The form is finely potted with gently rising sides and a lightly everted rim, finished with a delicate gilt edge characteristic of Regency Worcester tablewares.

The decoration is executed in the celebrated Dragon in Compartments pattern. Four lobed cartouches on the exterior enclose a dragon and a qilin, separated by reserves of symbolic precious objects. The interior mirrors the scheme with four identical panels of auspicious objects arranged symmetrically. The full composition represents the complete version of this famous Worcester design adapted to a bowl form.

Inspired by Chinese Kangxi famille-verte porcelain, the pattern was introduced at Worcester in the 1760s and remained one of the factory’s most highly regarded decorative schemes into the early nineteenth century.
