Victorian games tables emerged during the nineteenth century as domestic pastimes like chess, checkers, and card games grew in popularity among the middle and upper classes, necessitating specialised multifunctional furniture for parlours and drawing rooms.

These tables were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring intricately inlaid veneers for chess boards, turned supports, dovetail joints in drawers, and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery techniques, hand-turned wooden elements, natural timber grain variations, period brass fixtures, and signs of age-related patina on the finish and interior drawer linings.

An antique games table functions effectively as an accent piece in a living room or study, either left bare to display the inlaid top or styled minimally with a matching antique chess set to serve as a focal point.

Preserve rosewood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish.
