Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bobbin-turned furniture emerged as a popular style during the nineteenth century, characterised by lathe-turned wooden legs and stretchers resembling a series of spools or bobbins stacked together. This decorative woodwork drew inspiration from Seventeenth-century Seventeenth-Century Jacobean designs and was widely used across Victorian tables, chairs, and coat stands.

Victorian craftspeople predominantly utilised solid dense timbers such as mahogany, walnut, and oak. Construction typically featured hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-lathed turned legs, mortise and tenon joinery for stretchers, and brass castors attached to splayed trestle feet.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display natural age-related wear, hand-carved or hand-turned details with slight variations, original brass castors, and smooth patination on the mahogany surface. Inspecting the underside often reveals secondary wood like pine or oak used for structural blocks, along with traditional joining methods.

A period side table works well as a bridge between traditional and contemporary elements. Position it alongside a minimalist sofa topped with a modern ceramic lamp, or use it in an entryway as a focal console for artwork and decorative ceramics to add depth and warmth.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original finish. Avoid positioning the table next to direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or colour fading.
