Description

An important Royal Worcester porcelain sculpture from the celebrated Indian Craftsmen series, modelled by James Hadley in 1888. The figure portrays Shaban, a maker of gold brocade, seated upon a woven mat before his spinning wheel, wearing traditional costume with an embroidered Indian topi cap.

The surface is finished in the renowned Blush Ivory palette, delicately enriched with enamel highlights and restrained gilding, a luxury technique reserved for the factory’s highest quality sculptural wares of the late nineteenth century.

Conceived in the atmosphere of Victorian exhibition culture and the British fascination with Indian craftsmanship, the Indian Craftsmen figures were created as works of display sculpture rather than decorative novelties. This series was produced in very small numbers, and the market value of figures from the series has shown consistent growth over time.

The base carries impressed and printed Royal Worcester marks, registration number 63494, pattern number 1203, and date codes for 1888. Figures from this series are among the rarest sculptural productions of the factory and are consistently sought after by collectors.
