Description

Very decorative English Regency ebonised and inlaid side table on these wonderful sweeping legs with original castors, circa 1820.

The table top is finished in a very dark and rich rosewood with the rest of the table being ebonised, with the fine banding and marquetry of box wood contrasting beautifully. Some age and use marks but below decades of beeswax.

This would be great as a hall console table or as a living room side lamp table, but you can also swivel the table top and open it up as a games table if required.

Really super piece of very decorative Regency antique furniture.

FAQs

The Regency style, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1830, drew heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture, characterised by clean lines, classical proportions, and often ebonised or dark wood finishes accented with brass inlay.

Regency furniture typically utilised native hardwoods like mahogany, frequently ebonised to imitate exotic timbers, and featured intricate brass stringing, marquetry, and robust joinery such as mortise and tenon frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods, hand-cut dovetails, genuine wear consistent with age, period brass castors, and traditional finishing techniques such as French polish over ebonised wood.

A Regency games table provides a striking focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist modern seating or used as a versatile console against a neutral wall, blending historic craftsmanship with clean interior aesthetics.

Preserve ebonised surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and applying occasional professional wax polish suited for antique finishes.
