FAQs

Victorian stick stands gained immense popularity during the 19th century as expanding middle-class homes required dedicated hallway storage for walking canes, umbrellas, and parasols. Foundries utilised advances in sand casting to produce intricate, decorative, and durable ironware featuring figural, floral, and geometric motifs.

These pieces were typically produced using grey cast iron via traditional sand casting methods, often paired with removable ceramic or galvanized metal drip trays at the base to catch moisture. The components were bolted or fitted together, then hand-painted or lacquered for a durable finish.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit crisp casting details, heavy structural weight, and signs of age such as oxidisation beneath layers of historic paint. Registration marks, foundry numbers, or makers badges cast into the reverse or base are also common indicators of period manufacture.

A cast iron stick stand makes a strong architectural statement in an entrance hallway, effectively grounding minimalist spaces with industrial texture and historic character. It can be utilized functionally for umbrellas and walking canes or left empty as a sculptural decorative object.

Maintenance involves gently dusting with a soft brush and avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage historic finishes. To prevent rust, ensure the item is kept in a dry environment and regularly empty and clean any moisture collection trays at the base.
