This late Victorian stick and umbrella stand originates from 1890 and is attributed to Shoolbred in the English Country House style. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with brass fittings and a cast iron drip tray, the piece exhibits raised panel mouldings, turned wood supports, and decorative corner brackets. Notable visible details include elaborate cast brass finials shaped like radiating flower heads atop each front upright, a miniature gallery rail surmounting the top shelf, and a horizontal brass bar extending forward to hold walking sticks in place. The twin-section drip tray at the base shows speckled wear and surface marks from active past use, set above small bracket feet resting directly on the ground. Standing at a height of 105 cm, the stand occupies a compact floor footprint well suited to placement beside the front door of a home. Property owners can use this traditional hallway furniture piece today to organise umbrellas, walking sticks, and canes in an entryway or porch area.

Emerging in the early 19th century as essential hallway furniture, stick stands were created to organize umbrellas, parasols, and walking sticks. During the Victorian era, cabinetmakers elevated these functional items into decorative entryway statements combining fine timber with brass or cast iron metalwork.

Craftspeople predominantly used solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, complemented by brass rails, brackets, and decorative gallery trims. The base trays were commonly cast iron or zinc to contain moisture from wet umbrellas without damaging the surrounding timber frame.

Authentic period pieces display hallmarks such as hand-turned spindles, stamped makers badges or registration marks, heavy cast iron drip trays, and original brass fittings. Traditional joinery and natural patination on both wood and metal surfaces further distinguish antique originals from modern reproductions.

Position the stand in an entryway, foyer, or hallway to provide practical storage for walking sticks and umbrellas. Pairing the item with an antique wall mirror, a ceramic umbrella vase, or a woven runner creates a structured, welcoming entrance.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to nourish the wood finish. Clean brass components lightly without harsh abrasives to preserve historic patination, and ensure the metal drip tray is kept clean and dry.
