A C1930 Mahogany Games/sofa Table

1920 - 1940
Description

A Fine c1930 Mahogany games table for a sofa table or Chess, Backgammon or Draughts

Constructed in richly figured Cuban mahogany, the table features a crossbanded top centred with a delicate foliate marquetry roundel. Two hinged drop leaves allow the table to be used in a variety of settings, functioning equally well as a sofa table, console table or occasional games table.

When opened, the top reveals an inlaid chessboard, with a further lined backgammon board concealed beneath. The frieze is fitted with two drawers, providing practical storage for games pieces.

The table stands on elegant lyre-shaped supports united by a turned stretcher and terminates in original brass paw feet — a particularly attractive and desirable detail. The overall proportions and restrained ornament reflect Regency taste carried into the mid-Victorian period.

Presented in very good antique condition, with a warm colour and patina throughout and light age-related wear consistent with period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th century, sofa tables were designed to sit directly behind freestanding sofas to hold lamps, reading materials, or tea sets, often incorporating drawers and drop leaves.

These tables typically feature mahogany or rosewood timbers, decorative marquetry inlays, turned wooden stretchers, and brass hardware or paw feet.

Key characteristics include lyre-shaped end supports, reeded splayed legs ending in brass castors, symmetrical geometric or floral marquetry, and narrow table proportions.

Position the piece behind a sofa or against a hallway wall, topped with contemporary ceramic vessels, books, or a modern table lamp to contrast classic woodwork with current design elements.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year, and keep the piece clear of direct heat sources and bright sunlight.
