Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch coopered butter barrels were traditionally crafted in the 18th and 19th centuries for storing and transporting butter or other dairy products. Coopers used precise woodworking techniques to form watertight vessels bound by metal hoops, which became central utility items in historic European farmhouses.

These vessels were created by shaping vertical wooden staves fitted tightly together without glue, relying on exact angles. Polished brass or iron bands were driven over the tapered exterior to hold the staves under compression, creating a durable and stable container.

Authentic period barrels display hand-cut staves, subtle irregular alignment in the joinery, and period-appropriate brass fasteners or rivets. The brass bands often exhibit natural oxidation in recessed areas, while the timber shows signs of age-related shrinking or patination.

An antique coopered barrel serves as a textured accent on a kitchen island, sideboard, or open shelving unit. Its rich timber tones and reflective brass straps contrast effectively against muted, modern plaster backgrounds or stone surfaces.

Keep wooden vessels in environment-controlled rooms away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber staves from drying out and shrinking. Clean timber surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply neutral microcrystalline wax occasionally while avoiding harsh chemical brass cleaners on patinated metal.
