Antique Victorian Rosewood Barley Twist Occasional Side Table

19th century
Description

A stunning antique Victorian rosewood barley twist occasional side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is beautifully made and is of really high quality. The barley twist base gives a striking design aspect, it sits on a sturdy tripod base and has a beautiful slightly recessed rosewood top which has gorgeous grain patterns.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age. There are some small marks and indentations beneath the polish here and there, with plenty of character and charm as you would expect from an antique item.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barley twist turnings, inspired by seventeenth-century Solomonic columns, experienced a major revival during the Victorian era. Craftsmen utilised steam-bending and hand-carving techniques to create the distinct open spiral stems on side tables and stands.

Victorian accent tables were typically crafted from dense tropical hardwoods, predominantly rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. These timbers provided stability for delicate turning details and featured deep, rich grain patterns.

Authentic period pieces display distinct natural graining with dark streaks, irregular hand-carved spiral symmetry, and traditional joinery beneath the tabletop. Wear and slight oxidation on the underside of the tripod base also indicate age.

A compact rosewood table functions well alongside upholstered armchairs or in small reading nooks as a dedicated surface for lamps or beverages. The dark wood and sculptural column provide visual contrast against neutral modern decor.

Maintain the finish by applying natural beeswax paste once or twice a year and buffing with a soft cloth. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or surface checking.
