Antique Victorian Rosewood Side Table

19th century
Description

A gorgeous early Victorian rosewood side table, made in England and dating from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of extremely fine quality and is a very useful size. The rosewood has a stunning colour tone and wonderful grain patterns, the top has a beautiful pierced brass gallery around the edges. There are two drawers with lovely original green paper lining, the top drawer is a regular shape, the lower drawer has a stunning fabric design on the outside, and dips down into a lovely inverted arch shape. This was originally intended as a work table but it makes a beautiful occasional side table. The base is beautifully carved and sits on brass casters. This is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing table.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there, and a lovely overall patina.

The wood is Santos rosewood, which does not require a CITES or article 10.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian sewing table, also known as a work table, is a small piece of occasional furniture designed in the 19th century to hold needlework tools and materials within a drawer and a suspended fabric well.

These tables were typically crafted from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, and frequently featured brass galleries, silk or damask fabric wells, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature dense grain figures characteristic of rosewood, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass hardware, and period-appropriate carved or turned leg supports.

Position the piece as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa, utilising the top surface for lamps or small decorative items while displaying its historic profile.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
