This late Georgian console table adopts a half-moon form in dark brown mahogany, dating to around 1800 in an English country house style. The construction incorporates a semi-circular folding top above a plain frieze apron, supported on four slender square tapered legs finished with simple spade feet. The wood displays a rich dark grain with smooth surfaces across the top and apron, showing clean vertical lines down each leg. Practical dimensions measure 73 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Placement suits a hallway, landing, or beside the front door to provide a narrow surface for keys and decorative objects. The folding top allows the surface area to expand when required, making the piece functional against a wall or pulled out into a room. Construction remains strong and stable for daily use in a traditional or period interior.

FAQs

A demilune table features a semi-circular silhouette popularised in eighteenth-century Britain. These tables were designed to stand flush against hallway or reception room walls to maximise space while offering a functional top surface.

Georgian cabinetmakers predominantly used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, prized for their dense grain and deep reddish-brown colour. Secondary timbers such as pine, oak, or ash were frequently utilized for internal framing and carcass support.

Authentic eighteenth-century pieces typically show evidence of period construction, including hand-planed underside surfaces, irregular dovetail joints, and minor age-related timber shrinkage. Naturally aged patination and hand-carved details further support historical authenticity.

Positioning a demilune table in an entryway, hallway, or stair landing creates a clear focal point without obstructing foot traffic. The table surface can be dressed with a table lamp, a ceramic vessel, or a mirror mounted directly on the wall above to balance vertical proportions.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the finish. Keep the item clear of direct heat sources, radiators, and strong sunlight to prevent moisture loss and timber splitting.
