Description

Regency Style Mahogany Twin Pillar Dining Table – Early 20th Century Cabinetmaker Made

A superb Regency style mahogany twin pillar dining table, crafted in the early 20th century by a highly skilled cabinetmaker and inspired by the elegant dining furniture of the early 19th century. This exceptional table combines classical Regency proportions with outstanding materials and craftsmanship.

Of particular note is the tabletop, which was constructed using redundant antique Georgian mahogany, salvaged from earlier furniture. At the time, this was a prized and responsible source of beautifully seasoned timber, offering superior colour, stability, and grain that modern wood simply cannot replicate. The result is a top of remarkable richness, depth, and visual movement.

The table stands on twin turned pillars, each terminating in swept legs with brass caps and castors, allowing for ease of movement and excellent stability. Designed to extend, it comfortably accommodates large gatherings while retaining its elegant balance and refined presence when closed.

This is a highly versatile and impressive dining table, equally suited to a formal dining room, period interior, or refined contemporary setting.

Regency style furniture, spanning the late 18th to early 19th centuries, is characterised by classical proportions, clean lines, and neoclassical influences inspired by ancient Greece and Rome.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used dense tropical hardwoods such as Cuban and Honduras mahogany, often complemented by brass fittings, castors, and finely turned or reeded pedestals.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit traditional joinery, hand-cut components, patination appropriate to age, and solid timber framing beneath veneers rather than modern manufactured board.

Pairing classic mahogany timbers with minimalist seating or modern lighting creates an eclectic contrast that anchors the dining space with architectural presence.

Maintain timber furniture by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying quality beeswax.
