Designed in 1842 by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, the Pickelhaube was adopted by Prussian infantry units before spreading across other German states. It remained the standard headwear for military, police, and ceremonial units through the early stages of the First World War until replaced by steel helmets in 1916.
