Fine Large (18cm) Antique Conch Shell Cameo Aurora Chariot Mythical Scene

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Lee Sherman Antiques

This seashell is finely carved in relief with a depiction of the Roman Goddess Aurora, the Roman god of war. I''ve seen this scene described as ''Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn, and the Chariot of the Sun driven by Apollo, after the fresco by Guido Reni, the scene showing Aurora leading Apollo, and bringing light to the world; the chariot surrounded by female figures representing the hours, all below the putto Phosphor bearing a torch.'' Almost certainly Italian.

The fashion for carved seashells exploded in Italy during the 19th Century. The shells were used as a medium to demonstrate the artisan''s skill and were collected and celebrated, often by tourists as souvenirs of travel, for their intricately carved, typically Classical reliefs.

Overseas buyers, please note that a CITES certificate would be required and organised by the buyer or the buyer''s agent.
