Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, Georgian tripod tables feature a circular top supported by a central turned stem resting on three cabriole or swept legs. They were designed as versatile, movable pieces for serving tea or displaying items in formal reception rooms.

Craftsmen utilised native hardwoods such as elm and burr elm, employing hand-turned pedestal columns and dovetailed joinery for the legs. Burr timber featured dense, swirling grain patterns created from natural tree growth, requiring hand-planing and polishing.

Authentic late 18th to early 19th-century examples display hand-cut iron fitments, uneven wear consistent with age, and hand-carved joinery beneath the top. Look for natural shrinkage along the wood grain and original turned details on the central column.

Position the table beside an armchair as an occasional surface for books or drinks, or place it in an alcove to highlight the natural grain of the wood. Its compact footprint complements modern seating while adding architectural texture.

Apply a light layer of clear beeswax polish annually using a soft cloth, rubbing gently along the direction of the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or cracking over time.
