Parian Bust of William Ewart Gladstone

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely modelled Parian bust depicting William Ewart Gladstone, shown in later life with a high forehead, deeply set eyes, and pronounced sideburns. The sitter is portrayed wearing a formal Victorian jacket, waistcoat, and bow tie, with crisp detailing to the costume and sensitive modelling of the facial features. The bust is raised on an integral square Parian socle, the front inscribed “GLADSTONE.”

Executed in Parian ware—a fine unglazed porcelain developed in the mid-19th century to emulate marble—this bust exemplifies the popular Victorian taste for commemorative portrait sculpture intended for domestic, institutional, or educational settings. The reverse is smoothly finished, and the overall modelling reflects the restrained naturalism characteristic of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Parian ware is a type of unglazed biscuit porcelain formulated in Staffordshire in the 1840s to emulate carved marble. Named after the Greek island of Paros, renowned for its white marble, it allowed fine sculptural art to be reproduced affordably for Victorian homes.

Parian ceramic was created using liquid porcelain clay containing a high proportion of feldspar. The slip mixture was poured into plaster moulds, fired at high temperatures, and left unglazed to achieve a matte, semi-translucent finish.

Authentic period pieces feature a smooth, marble-like surface texture, precise moulded detail, subtle translucency under direct light, and often bear impressed manufacturer marks or artist signatures along the pedestal base.

Place the bust against a dark wall or within a mahogany bookshelf to emphasise the pale white porcelain finish, creating a classic accent alongside books and brass objects.

Accumulated dust should be removed with a soft, dry bristle brush. For deeper cleaning, gentle washing with warm water and mild conservation soap is recommended, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or abrasive cloths.
