Originating in Brienz, Switzerland, during the early 19th century, Black Forest wood carving became famous for highly detailed depictions of wildlife, particularly bears, designed as functional luxury items and souvenirs for wealthy Grand Tour travellers.

Victorian desk companions were frequently crafted using a combination of hand-carved indigenous timbers, such as lime wood or walnut, paired with cast and stamped brass, bronze, or silver-plated metalwork.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature fine, hand-chiselled surface texture imitating fur, naturalistic proportions, micro-carved details around the eyes and paws, and evidence of historical wear or patination on original brass elements.

Position the piece on a dark timber writing desk, a leather-bound book stack inside a bookcase, or atop a mantelpiece to serve as a conversational sculptural focal point alongside traditional or modern stationery.

Dust the timber carving gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, and clean the brass components sparingly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that could strip natural historic patina or seep into the adjacent wood.
