FAQs

The Willow pattern originated in late 18th-century England, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese motifs to create a narrative design depicting a tragic love story. It quickly became mass-produced by numerous Staffordshire potteries, dominating the ceramic market throughout the Victorian era.

These items were typically made from earthenware or ironstone, decorated using the transfer printing technique. An engraved copper plate transferred a design onto tissue paper, which was then applied by hand to the bisqueware before glazing and high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic signs of age such as crazing in the glaze, minor kiln spurs, and subtle imperfections in the blue transfer print. Makers marks, impressed numbers, or registry stamps on the underside also help verify the period of manufacture.

These pieces can be displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or dining tables to introduce historical character and a crisp pop of colour. Pairing them with neutral tones and modern textures creates a balanced look that highlights their intricate patterns.

Antique ceramics should be hand washed gently using mild detergent and lukewarm water, avoiding abrasive sponges or dishwashers entirely. Due to the porous nature of older bodies and historical glazes, prolonged soaking should be avoided to prevent staining.
