FAQs

Victorian table gongs gained popularity in British households during the late 19th century, heavily influenced by the aesthetic movement and colonial trade with Asia. They were traditionally used in large homes to announce the arrival of dinner guests.

These pieces typically combined natural animal materials such as cow, steer, or ram horns with seasoned hardwoods like oak or mahogany, supporting a metal gong disc made from brass, bronze, or copper with silver plating.

Authenticity is determined by examining the construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails or screws, natural patination on the horn and wood, hallmarks or EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) stamps on the metal, and signs of age-appropriate wear.

A table gong serves as an eclectic sculptural focal point. It can be placed on a sideboard, a mantelpiece, or an office bookshelf to introduce texture, historical narrative, and a conversational focal point to the room.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent the horn from warping or cracking. Metal parts should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that damage silver plating.
