A lowboy is a small table with drawers, typically used as a dressing table or side table, which first appeared in the late 17th century and gained widespread popularity during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods.

Authentic period lowboys are typically constructed from solid walnut or feature walnut veneers applied to secondary woods like oak or pine, often incorporating dovetailed drawer construction and brass batwing handles.

Identification involves examining hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, tool marks, patination, and traditional joinery methods that distinguish period pieces from later reproductions.

This piece works effectively as an accent table in a living room, a compact hallway console, or a sophisticated bedside table, providing functional surface area while introducing historic warmth and texture to contemporary schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished wooden surface.
