Irish 19th Century Carved Serving Table by Robert Strahan & Co

19th century
Description

Irish 19th century carved serving table by robert strahan & co circa 1860.

Robert strahan & co were a well known and highly exhibited furniture maker from dublin, ireland.  founded in 1776 and continued to trade until 1969.  this piece retains it's paper label, baring the company name and the address of 24/25 henry st.

Superb quality serving table very much in the adams style.   break fronted in shape top, with a dentil and rounded edge.  deep apron decorated with carved patera and fluting, with a central swag design, either side of which are 2 deep concealed drawers.  raised on 4 carved and fluted legs and standing on 4 delightful carved paw feet.

A real statement piece that would suite any grand entrance or hallway.

Later strengthening to underside of top surface, expected very minor shrinkage between top surface planks.  minor surface marks to top surface, but kept in as near original condition as possible, these could be re-polished if desired.  fantastic colour and patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Irish Regency furniture from the early to mid-nineteenth century often features dense, high-quality mahogany with deep relief carving. Common design traits include reeded borders, drapery swags, floral paterae, and robustly carved claw or paw feet.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany for visible surfaces, valued for its fine grain and stability. Secondary timbers such as pine, oak, or ash were used for drawer linings and internal structural framework.

Authentic period pieces often feature stamped maker marks or paper trade labels on drawer edges or back panels. Construction markers include hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A dark mahogany table creates a focal point when placed against neutral wall tones in a hallway or dining room. Modern artwork or contemporary ceramic vessels placed on the surface balance the historical woodwork.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources.
