Description

Dating to the 18th century, this delightful Flemish tapestry depicts an Arcadian landscape. To the rear ground there is a forest with a vista revealing a chateau, while to foreground a cheerful hunting dog appears to have captured a bird. The colours are autumnal and subdued with ivory silk in places that give the composition some vivacity. A pretty border of acanthus leaves and flowers completes the composition. Restored to very good usable condition and lined. Professionally cleaned. It is also a very good size ideal for decoration in many settings.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Flemish Verdure Wall Tapestry to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historic textiles must be protected from direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation and fibre embrittlement. They should be professionally cleaned only by textile conservators, gently vacuumed through a protective mesh screen on a low setting to remove dust, and maintained in stable humidity-controlled environments.

A large antique tapestry acts as a dramatic focal point in contemporary spaces, softening hard architectural lines and absorbing sound. It can be hung securely using a concealed Velcro suspension system or a specialist brass rod, paired with neutral walls and minimalist furnishings to let the rich textures and verdant colours stand out.

Authentic antique tapestries exhibit handspun natural fibres with complex variations in dye lots, hand-knotted repairs or historic relining on the reverse, and use pre-synthetic indigo, madder, or weld-based colourants. Examination under magnification reveals irregular hand-weaving techniques rather than the uniform, machine-punched regularity of modern jacquard reproductions.

Traditional tapestries were handwoven on horizontal or vertical looms using organic warp threads (often linen or wool) and weft threads made from dyed wool and silk. The inclusion of silk threads was particularly valued for its ability to reflect light and add subtle tonal highlights to foliage and water.

A verdure tapestry is a woven textile featuring a stylised landscape or forest scene, which became popular in Flanders and France during the 16th and 17th centuries. Historically, these large hangings were used in castles and manor houses not only for decorative display but also for insulation against cold stone walls.
