Large French Soft-paste Chinoiserie Figure Group, C.1750–1760

Description

A substantial mid-18th century French soft-paste porcelain figure group modelled in the chinoiserie manner associated with early Vincennes and Sèvres. The tableau comprises two European ladies and two Chinese attendants beside a scalloped jardinière with basket-moulded sides. The modelling is crisp, with expressive faces, well-defined drapery folds and rococo scrollwork typical of French soft-paste sculpture of the 1750s.

The glaze displays the slightly creamy translucency and surface speckling associated with early soft-paste production. The underside retains an original kiln adhesion, consistent with mid-18th-century firing practice. Groups of this scale were luxury display pieces intended for mantel or console presentation.
