A quaich is a traditional Scottish drinking vessel characterised by its shallow bowl and two or more opposing handles, known as lugs. Historically used as a welcoming cup for offering a dram of whisky to guests, it evolved from wooden stave-built or carved vessels into important cultural artefacts.

Early quaichs were typically hand-carved from native hardwoods such as sycamore, laburnum, or alder, often shaped from a single block of wood (treen) or constructed using stave-and-hoop techniques held together with willow or metal bands.

Authentic pieces display characteristic tool marks from hand-working, appropriate patination and oxidisation consistent with age, shrinkage cracks, and wear patterns around the lugs that indicate genuine historical use rather than modern reproduction.

An antique treen quaich can be displayed as a decorative object on a bookshelf, sideboard top, or coffee table, adding organic texture, warmth, and historical narrative to minimalist or rustic modern schemes.

Treen should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent wood splitting. Maintenance should be limited to occasional gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth; harsh cleaning agents or water immersion must be avoided.
