This Edwardian Sutherland table dates from around 1900 and exemplifies traditional English Country House design. Fashioned from mahogany, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour with rich natural grain patterns across the rectangular drop-leaf top, which features canted corners. Spindle turned supports and uprights rest upon a trestle base fitted with a central turned stretcher bar. The table stands 71 cm high, with a width of 68 cm when folded and a depth of 29 cm. At the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, the piece functions as a versatile side table. Raising both drop leaves extends the surface to a width of 85 cm, providing extra space for drinks, books or lamps. The drop-leaf mechanism allows the leaves to hang down compactly when floor space is limited, making the item suitable for both sitting rooms and reception spaces where flexible proportions are required.

FAQs

Introduced in the mid-19th century and widely produced through the Edwardian era, a Sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf occasional table with hinged leaves supported by swivelling gate-legs, engineered to provide maximal surface area while occupying minimal floor space when folded.

Edwardian Sutherland tables were primarily crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently featuring flame mahogany veneers, slender turned leg supports, and brass hinges or castors.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-finished rule joints along the hinged drop leaves, original brass fittings, dark natural wood oxidation, and turned leg stretchers with slim trestle bases typical of early 20th-century craftsmanship.

Position this versatile table beside a sofa or within a narrow hallway alcove, keeping the leaves folded for everyday compact use and opening them when hosting tea or displaying decorative objects.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or fading, wipe gently with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, and apply beeswax sparingly once or twice a year.
