19th century
Sold 4 December 2025 · James Cohen Antique Carpets

Description

Richly coloured Turkoman trapping, a tent decoration and erstwhile face of a bag, these are popular with collectors. The saturated natural dyes are very attractive and this one is special for the use of light blue and magenta silk highlights, little bright flashes of light nestling within the woollen pile. I also enjoy the stylised 'Mina Khani' design that has been used here, it's a showcase of flowers and is well animated.

A Beshir torba is a traditional small utility bag or hanging textile produced by the Beshir sub-group of Turkmen weavers residing in Central Asia, historically used for storage or as a decorative trapping.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted using handspun wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, dyed with natural colourants such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a screen attachment, protection from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and maintaining stable humidity levels to deter insect damage.

These textiles are often mounted on linen and framed as wall art or displayed on neutral walls to highlight their intricate geometry and saturated natural dyes within contemporary spaces.

Authenticity is assessed through structural analysis of the knotting, characteristic rich red and orange-red colour palettes, traditional tribal motifs, and natural wear patterns consistent with age.
