Brass-bound wooden buckets, particularly those of Dutch origin, date back to the 18th and 19th centuries when they were primarily utilised as peat, coal, or log buckets by the fireside, constructed using traditional coopering techniques.

These pieces are typically handcrafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring hand-beaten brass bands, swing handles, and occasionally protective metal liners to withstand heavy solid fuel.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut dovetail or tongue-and-groove joints, hand-hammered brass pins securing the metal bands, natural timber shrinkage, and appropriate patination consistent with age and use.

Such sculptural vessels serve exceptionally well as fireside log holders or umbrella stands in an entrance hall, introducing texture and warmth to contemporary living spaces.

Maintain the wood with occasional applications of quality beeswax and clean the brass gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
