Regency Mahogany Miniature Bowfront Chest

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late Regency Period Mahogany Miniature Chest, Of Bowfronted Form, Having Well Figured Top With Ebonised Stringing, Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Above Elegant Shaped Apron And Original Splayed Bracket Feet.

A charming little miniature chest, constructed using good quality, well figured timbers and retains its original handles plus its original feet. Almost certainly this was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece of furniture originally.

There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models buy a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.

It is certain that this is both a useful and attractive piece of antique miniature furniture and remains in good condition, ready to be placed straight into the home. It would work wonderfully on top of a dressing table, or full size chest of drawers, in a bedroom for storage of cuff links, jewellery or similar small but valuable items. As with all items which we offer for sale it has received a natural wax polish in our workshops before being offered for sale to ensure that its in the best possible condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency miniature bowfront chest is a small-scale furniture piece produced during the early 19th century, frequently created as a cabinetmaker apprentice piece or trade sample displaying a distinctive convex front profile.

These pieces were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetailed drawer construction, turned wooden knobs, and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, natural wood oxidation, hand-cut dovetail joints, and original proportioned hardware consistent with early 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Compact scaled chests serve as functional decorative accents atop sideboards, writing desks, or dressing tables for organising jewellery, stationery, and small accessories.

Keep the wood surface clean using a soft dry cloth, apply clear beeswax polish periodically, and avoid positioning the item near direct heat sources or humid areas to prevent timber movement.
