S and S Timms Antiques Ltd has dated this Georgian Miniature Mahogany Chest to the 19th Century.

Dating from the early part of the 19th century, this charming little chest is a particularly good example of Georgian miniature furniture, essentially replicating the form and construction of a full-size chest of drawers, but on a much smaller scale.
The reeded decoration to the mouldings is a particularly attractive feature and gives the chest a little more refinement than one often finds and the original turned wooden knobs are pleasingly simple.

As is so often the case with miniature furniture, it is difficult to establish its exact original purpose with any certainty. Pieces such as this could have been made as apprentice or cabinetmaker’s model to demonstrate skill, as travelling salesman’s samples, or simply as decorative and practical objects in their own right. Whatever its original intention, considerable care has clearly gone into its construction and it remains a lovely little piece of Georgian cabinetmaking.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this miniature chest has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
