Introduction

Antique Tall Chest of Drawers

The heading covers several different objects. The plain single-carcass chest of five to seven drawers dominates: "chest" appears in 578 of 618 titles on Sellingantiques and "drawers" in 408, and titles like "Tall Mahogany Chest Of Drawers" carry no second term at all. That is the version you're most likely to meet.

After that come the two-part forms. The chest-on-chest, or tallboy, sets a smaller upper case on a larger lower one, and about one listing in six is one of these. The Wellington chest is narrower and deeper, with a hinged side pilaster that locks every drawer at once. The French semainier, traditionally seven drawers for the days of the week, accounts for around one in ten. A smaller strand raises a single case on a legged stand.

Timbers split the field. Mahogany leads with 262 titles, walnut follows at 123, and oak and pine make up a plainer country line. Bow-fronted and narrow or slim examples are the recurring shape variants.

Dating runs 1750 to 1930. The 1920s is the largest single dated decade, so a good many of these are twentieth-century chests made in Georgian and Queen Anne styles rather than period furniture. Much of the rest is dated by label - "19th Century", "Victorian", "Georgian" - or given as circa, which makes a stated century a dealer's bracket rather than a fixed year.

What sets them apart

Top And Bottom

Timber and figure do most of the work. Burr walnut, flame or figured mahogany, satinwood, kingwood and oyster veneer sit at the top of the range; plain oak and pine sit at the bottom. Thirty-five titles name burr, twenty-one figured, sixteen flame, and those words are doing more than describing colour.

Then form. Two-part chest-on-chests and tallboys sit above the plain single carcass, and a serpentine or bow front pushes above a straight one. Added function counts too: secretaire drawers, writing drawers and fitted collector's or pharmacy interiors all lift a chest above the same case with plain drawers.

The sharpest divide is period against revival. Early Georgian walnut and mahogany occupies the very top - George I and George II walnut chest-on-chests, a George III mahogany tallboy - while the many 1900 to 1930 pieces described as "in the Georgian style", "Queen Anne style" or "Georgian revival" sit well below them, and plain 1920s oak chests sit lower still.

The Antique Tall Chest of Drawers Glossary

Tallboy
A two-part chest, a smaller upper case standing on a larger lower one. Sixty-eight titles use "boy" and thirty-two say tallboy outright, so both spellings lead to the same object.
Wellington chest
A narrow tall chest with a hinged side pilaster that locks all the drawers together. Forty-nine titles name it, and secretaire and filing versions turn up among them.
Semainier
A French tall chest, traditionally seven drawers for the seven days. It's spelled semainier, semanier, semainiere and semenier across these listings, so the same form hides behind several searches.
Bow front
A convex curved drawer front, named in thirty-two titles. Serpentine, in twenty-two, curves out and then in again.
Burr walnut
Figured veneer cut from a burr growth on the tree. Flame mahogany is the flame-shaped figure of crotch-cut timber, and both are named in titles as a selling point.
Scotch chest
A tall Scottish chest, often deep and flame-grained. Twelve titles say Scottish; the sample also carries a gentleman's sporran chest with sock drawers.
Questions people ask

Antique Tall Chest of Drawers: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tallboy and a chest-on-chest?

They're the same object under two names: a smaller upper case standing on a larger lower one. Sixty-eight titles use "boy", thirty-two say tallboy.

Both terms turn up throughout the listings, and about one tall chest in six on Sellingantiques is one of these two-part forms.

How many drawers does a tall chest usually have?

Drawer counts named in titles cluster on five, six and seven. The French semainier is traditionally seven, one for each day of the week.

A "bank of drawers" means something different: a run of drawers of similar depth rather than graduated. Fourteen titles use the phrase, and the sample includes a watchmaker's bank of nine.

Which timbers turn up most often?

Mahogany leads, named in 262 titles, with walnut second at 123. Oak accounts for 65 and pine 21, forming a plainer country strand.

At the upper end you'll also see satinwood, kingwood, rosewood and oyster veneer, along with burr walnut and flame or figured mahogany.

Are these chests all English?

Mostly, though French is a steady presence at 63 titles, largely semainiers and commode-form chests, some with marble tops.

Everything else is sparse. Single Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Dutch Colonial, Flemish, Spanish, Anglo-Indian and Korean pieces have appeared, including a Korean bandaji elm chest and a North African narrow tall chest.

What does a Wellington chest do that others don't?

It has a hinged pilaster down one side that swings across and locks every drawer at the same time. That's the whole point of the form.

Forty-nine titles name one, and secretaire and filing versions exist. They're a small share of what has sold, but far commoner among chests currently listed.

Do tall chests come in pairs?

Rarely. The sample turns up only a handful: a pair of Wellington chests, a pair of narrow Victorian mahogany chests, a pair of French cartonnier tall chests.

Singles are the norm across the whole category.
