This tall chest of drawers, also known as a seven-day chest, is a French Louis XV style side cabinet dating from 1900. The piece is constructed from walnut with matched veneers in a warm brown colour, complemented by gilded brass drop handles and ormolu mounts at the top corners and on the serpentine apron. Seven horizontal drawers run smoothly, each detailed with rope-twist moulding framing the drawer fronts. Raised on slender cabriole legs, the cabinet measures 118 cm high, 42 cm wide and 39 cm deep. In a modern home, this narrow antique storage unit suits a hallway, bedroom or study as a practical drawer chest for organizing small accessories and daily items.

FAQs

A semainier is a tall, narrow French chest of drawers traditionally constructed with seven drawers, one for each day of the week, originating during the Louis XV period in the eighteenth century.

Traditional Louis XV chests feature fine wood veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or walnut over solid wood carcasses, accented with cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts and handles.

Key features include sweeping cabriole legs, asymmetrical rococo mounts, sinuous silhouettes, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and detailed wood veneer work.

A tall, slim chest functions efficiently in narrow alcoves, hallways, or bedrooms, offering vertical storage while serving as a focal point paired with minimalist wall lighting.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or colour fading, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying beeswax periodically.
