Fine 19th Century Tall Swedish Burr Walnut Wellington Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

Fine 19th Century Tall Swedish Burr Walnut Wellington Chest of Drawers

A rare and elegant 19th Century Swedish burr walnut Wellington chest of drawers, of tall and desirable proportions, retaining its original side locking mechanism and exceptional figured walnut veneers.

The chest is beautifully veneered throughout in richly figured burr walnut, displaying striking mirror-matched patterns across each drawer front. The warm golden and honey-coloured tones are enhanced by finely carved side pilasters and original turned walnut knob handles, creating a piece of considerable visual appeal.

The upper section incorporates two useful fall-front drawers, ideal for storing documents, stationery or smaller personal items, above four generously proportioned drawers providing ample storage. The original hinged locking stile to the side secures the drawer fronts in classic Wellington fashion, demonstrating the quality and ingenuity of 19th Century cabinet making.

Recently cleaned, waxed and polished, the chest is presented in excellent decorative order, with a wonderful depth of colour and mellow patina accumulated over many years.

A highly practical and decorative antique piece, equally suited to a bedroom, drawing room, study or hallway, and an increasingly sought-after example of Scandinavian 19th century furniture.

Height 141cms x Width 66cms x Depth 50cms.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Named after the Duke of Wellington, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow suite of drawers typically secured by a hinged side flap or pilaster that locks over the drawer ends.

These pieces were frequently crafted using figure-rich burr walnut veneers over solid pine or oak framing, complemented by turned wooden handles and hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic examples feature a functional hinged locking pilaster along one vertical edge, hand-sawn drawer linings, and natural age-related patina or timber movement.

Due to its slender vertical footprint, a Wellington chest suits narrow alcoves, hallway recesses, or dressing rooms, pairing well alongside contemporary architectural elements and lighting.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer movement, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish.
