This late 19th-century Swedish chest of drawers is a traditional storage piece belonging to the 19th-century Scandinavian style. The piece uses solid walnut and burr walnut veneer with a warm brown hand-waxed finish, showing prominent natural wood grain patterns across the front drawers and sides. The structure includes four full-width drawers arranged vertically, each fitted with two round brass drop ring handles and a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Additional decorative elements consist of carved corner drops hanging below the overhanging top moulding and block feet supporting the base. Height 106 cm x Width 100 cm x Depth 46 cm. In a modern interior, this chest of drawers provides functional storage capacity for a bedroom, dressing room, hallway, or living space. The neutral wood tones integrate easily into traditional English country house interiors or contemporary bedroom layouts. The smooth top surface provides a practical platform for lamps, photographs, mirrors, or decorative objects, while the deep drawers accommodate clothing, linens, or household accessories.

FAQs

During the late 19th century, Swedish cabinetmakers adapted European styles such as Biedermeier and Neo-Classicism, combining practical storage form with rich timber veneers like burr walnut.

These chests typically feature a softwood primary structure faced with thin cuts of burr walnut veneer, fitted with cast brass drop handles and iron drawer locks.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, irregular saw marks on the back panels, natural wood oxidisation, and original cast brass escutcheons.

Place the piece against neutral, muted walls to contrast the rich timber grain, styling the top surface with simple contemporary ceramics or modern artwork to balance the traditional aesthetic.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality bees wax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking.
